

ADI and Control4 Showcase Design-Led Smart Home Integration at Luxury Lake Norman Residence

Perched on a peninsula overlooking North Carolina's Lake Norman, a luxury waterfront residence has been completely transformed through a 16-month whole-home renovation that took the property back to its structural shell before rebuilding it around a contemporary vision that balances design and technology. The project focused on bringing together automation, lighting, audio, networking and security in ways that preserved the property's architecture, uninterrupted lake views and carefully curated interiors.
To achieve that vision, the homeowner partnered with Charlotte-based HTS (Home Technology Solutions) and an interior design firm from the earliest stages of the renovation. Built around the Control4 platform from ADI, the completed installation combines Control4 automation, Lux Lighting, Triad audio, Araknis networking and Luma surveillance to deliver intuitive control while allowing the technology itself to fade into the background.
"The technology was important, but aesthetics were always the priority," said the homeowner. "We wanted everything to blend naturally into the home rather than stand out. The technology is there when you need it, but it never becomes the focus of the space, and that's exactly what we were trying to achieve."
That philosophy shaped the project from the outset. With expansive glazing framing panoramic views across Lake Norman, preserving the visual character of the home became as important as tech performance and convenience. Throughout the installation, HTS worked closely with the homeowner and interior designer on even the smallest placement decisions, confirming the locations of televisions, touchscreens and other visible technology before installation to ensure each complemented the home's architecture and interior finishes.
“Technology doesn’t have to dominate a home,” said Mike Fitton, president and CEO of HTS. “When it’s planned properly, it blends naturally into the architecture and interiors, becoming part of the overall design rather than drawing attention to itself. Early in the project, we worked closely with the homeowner and interior designer to ensure every technology decision supported that vision.”
Lighting became one of the clearest examples of the project's collaborative approach. Rather than filling walls with banks of conventional switches, Lux Lighting keypads and personalized lighting scenes simplified the user experience while complementing the home’s contemporary interiors. The streamlined controls allowed lighting to become part of the design language while giving the homeowners effortless control of different moods throughout the day.
“Clients increasingly recognize how important it is to integrate high-end, streamlined technology into the overall interior design,” said Samantha Holcman, interior designer. “When everything is considered together, you create spaces that are elegant, comfortable and effortless to live in.”
The same design philosophy extended throughout the wider installation. Araknis networking equipment was carefully concealed to provide robust whole-home connectivity without disrupting the visual flow of the interiors, while Triad in-ceiling loudspeakers delivered distributed audio throughout the principal living spaces without introducing unnecessary visual clutter. A Samsung Frame TV was selected to blend naturally into the main family room, while Episode soundbars were deployed selectively in secondary spaces where they best supported the overall design intent.
Behind the scenes, the Control4 platform unifies lighting, audio, climate control, surveillance, security, gate access and other connected systems through a single intuitive interface. Replacing multiple standalone applications with one integrated platform has simplified everyday living while ensuring the technology remains easy for the entire family to use.
"We wanted everything working through one interface," the homeowner explained. "Instead of juggling separate apps for security, audio and everything else, it all works together in one place. It keeps day-to-day living simple while allowing the technology to stay in the background, exactly as we intended."
Security was integrated with the same level of consideration. Luma surveillance cameras provide comprehensive coverage around the property while remaining visually unobtrusive, supported by Luma Bridge analytics, Control4 Chime, Qolsys security and integrated access control to provide reassurance without compromising the home's design.
For Fitton, projects such as the Lake Norman residence demonstrate how early collaboration with interior designers can produce better outcomes for both homeowners and integrators.
“Today, we can meet interior designers’ needs far better than we could in the past,” he said. “Rather than getting in their way, we can highlight the beautiful spaces they’re creating. Technology should reinforce great design, not compete with it.”
The completed residence now delivers intuitive whole-home control, integrated entertainment and comprehensive security while maintaining the calm, uncluttered aesthetic envisioned at the beginning of the project.
